TheSpeedGamers

I spent over two years involved directly with TheSpeedGamers. I am still a member, but passed on my administrative duties and stepped down to concentrate on my career and other projects.

While a part of the Staff, I helped out with many aspects of the site and streams. Modifications to the themes and functionality on the WordPress blog and phpBB forum were frequent, along with some rather large custom projects such as a connection between the two softwares to show forum user information next to comments made on the blog. The development aspects were in addition to the standard administrative tasks, including forum and chat moderation, spam message cleanup, medal (achievement) awarding, handling fan art submissions, and running contests of various types.

The development I am most proud of would be the streaming page used during every marathon. At the time of its creation, the lag generated by a live video stream continuing for many hours caused a lot of users to repeatedly reload the page, which in turn greatly increased the server load. My solution was a simple “TSG Button”—coined by a longtime member—which destroyed and regenerated the Flash viewer, on the client’s side. This page was further extended by controls added to the Flash-based chat, to turn it off for IRC client users, a tab displaying the rules, and commentary schedule.
